We are also always looking for technical expertise for our agricultural project as well as dedicated people to lend our gardener Boniface a helping hand on-site.
The Shamba is a diverse tropical home garden located about a 15-minute walk from the MCC. Here, fruit and vegetables are produced on terraced fields to provide the children at the MCC with the greatest possible variety of healthy, organically grown food. When we have a very good harvest, we also like to sell parts of the yield. The fields are divided into plots for better crop rotation, and water-saving, efficient irrigation methods are used: on the one hand, an irrigation method over 2,000 years old using clay pots embedded in the ground, and on the other, modern drip irrigation.
Our Shamba is relatively small and is therefore used as efficiently as possible. Individual structural and cultivation elements don’t just fulfill one function, but also support other areas in the garden, thereby providing multiple benefits.
The goal is to increase soil fertility in the long term in this way, in order to meet people’s needs, especially with regard to climate change. In addition, the Shamba serves as a learning site for the students of the Academy of Maisha Mazuri and for the farmers in the surrounding area.
