There is a lot of positive momentum at the Senior Secondary School this summer 2024.
For the first time, the school and its staff organized a day dedicated entirely to sex education and health awareness.
A very progressive move by Kenyan standards, which was embraced with curiosity and openness by the 138 students.
The range of topics spanned from “body changes during growth” and “teenage pregnancy and abortion” to “sexual violence” and “sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and AIDS.”
Through group work, the young people were able to gain essential basic knowledge. It was clear that even the younger ones approached the topics of sexuality and health responsibly, sensibly, and with surprising maturity.
But that was far from all the extra activities:
In addition to career counseling and an information day about choosing a major and university paths, there was another premiere: an extra study week offered to students during the break. All the teachers agreed to prepare their students for exams in intensive sessions outside of regular school hours. These extra hours during the holidays were gratefully accepted; only one student was missing due to illness. We’re crossing our fingers that the intensive week pays off and that all Form 4 students can now head into their final exams with optimism.
On a side note, there is also positive news from the Academy’s farm. The fruits and vegetables are thriving, and teachers and students planted about a dozen lemon trees around the girls’ dormitory, among other things.
