It’s wild… how fast time flies.

September started with a big two-day workshop at the Secondary School, which we were also allowed to attend. Classes ‘Form 1’ through ‘Form 4′ gathered to listen to presentations by students and teachers. Not only was Nicholas, the director of the Secondary School, present, but Jimmy Kilonzi and his wife also gave speeches. On the first day, topics such as adolescence, teen pregnancy, and contraception were covered. With the help of PowerPoint presentations and short plays, these important topics were conveyed in a realistic and clear way. We also created a presentation about teen pregnancy and its prevention—in English, of course. On the second day, we looked at the various options available after Secondary School, as career plays a crucial role here. For us, it was very interesting to see how such significant topics are taught in Kenya. Through the time spent together, we were able to build even closer connections with the students of our own age, so fun and learning together were the main focus. To loosen things up, there was singing and dancing every now and then. To finish off, there was a “dance battle” between the girls and boys. Additionally, Jimmy Kilonzi brought soda and cake for everyone on the second day because he was so proud of the workshop’s success and the students’ performance.

<a href=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-04-at-12.37.02.jpeg""><img decoding="async" class="" alignleft="" wp-image-7283="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-04-at-12.37.02-1100x733.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""364"" height=""243"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"><a href=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-17.48.12.jpeg""><img decoding="async" class="" alignleft="" wp-image-7284="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-17.48.12-733x1100.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""162"" height=""243"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"><a href=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/IMG_4306.jpeg""><img decoding="async" class="" wp-image-7397="" alignnone="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/IMG_4306-1100x733.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""366"" height=""244"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

In the first week of September, we went on safari for fourteen days. The diverse landscapes and the wildlife in Kenya are incredibly impressive. From the hot north, we went via Masai Mara and Amboseli to Mombasa on the coast. A trip to Kenya is definitely worth it!

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7286="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-17.48.54-200x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""200"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"> <img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7287="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-17.49.09-200x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""200"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

As souvenirs from our safari, we brought each child a beaded bracelet, which now decorate their wrists. The kids also got four new balls, because the wear and tear on the stony soccer field with so many children and teenagers is simply enormous. Three soccer balls and one volleyball. So that the Secondary students don’t have to keep shooting goals with their old, broken basketball, they also got a new soccer ball. Now the field is occupied every day and tournaments are held. For example, last Sunday afternoon there was a big soccer tournament between the Secondary School girls and the MCC girls. The MCC was happy about a 3-1 victory.

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7288="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-04-at-12.40.15-200x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""200"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

Like every Saturday, we were busy making chapati again this month. With music and singing, the dough is kneaded, rolled out, and then fried golden brown in oil on typical African charcoal stoves. On our last weekend, we had 1.6 kg of peanut butter for the chapati breakfast on Sunday. We were still licking our lips an hour later.

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" wp-image-7290="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-04-at-12.41.03-1-300x225.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""399"" height=""299"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"> <img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7291="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.00.45-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"> <img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7292="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-17.56.38-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

Farmer Boniface does excellent farm work. In the last few days, he was able to harvest three large buckets of tomatoes, with about 150 pieces per bucket, which are needed for the dish “Ugali,” for example. If you are interested in how this African food is cooked and how it tastes, then stay tuned for the cooking video we filmed with Julius. This will appear on the HandinHand Instagram account soon and can already be found here on the website in the gallery under short films. As a farewell gift, Boniface received two pairs of rubber boots and eight pairs of gloves to make his work easier.

Thanks to our numerous donations, we were able to coordinate with the team to get a total of 47 workbooks for all the Secondary students in the program. Everything from chemistry, biology, physics, and math to Kiswahili, geography, and history is included. This benefits the students twice over, as everyone received a different book and they can swap with each other as needed.

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7293="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.02.40-300x225.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""300"" height=""225"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

Furthermore, our donations even went far enough that we were able to support 76 families with chickens and rabbits. “Domestic animals” play a significant role in Kenya, as they provide eggs, milk, and meat and are therefore important for daily life. The families living in the slums in Nairobi do not have the space or the means to keep animals, so they were supported in other ways with the same amount. Unfortunately, the organization and procurement of so many animals was not quite so easy, which is why we were no longer able to witness the handover to the families, as our departure was just around the corner…

THANK YOU to all those who participated so numerously in our fundraising campaigns in Germany, allowing us to help the children, families, and the project.

September 24, 2024, was a very special day for us that we will never forget. Early in the morning, we set off with the social worker Mercy to visit four families in the two largest slums in Nairobi—Kibera and Mathare. We were accompanied by the open-hearted Linniet, the local social worker in charge. It was impressive and shocking at the same time to see how the families survive there. Not only do they have to fight poverty every day, but the heavy flooding in the last rainy season also washed away some houses near the river. Therefore, many had to build a new home. It was all the more beautiful to look into the happy faces when we visited the households and presented our guest gift. This consisted of bar soap, ugali flour, and sugar, which we bought directly from local shops to support the people there.

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7294="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.08.17-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"> <img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7295="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.05.03-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"> <img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" wp-image-7296="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.08.41-300x246.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""365"" height=""299"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

On our way home, we stopped at the Mobility Center in Malaa. This is also part of the project, where apprentices from the Skills Center complete their internships, for example as cooks or automotive mechatronics technicians. Surprisingly, we met the director Jimmy Kilonzi and his wife Cynthia there, with whom we had lunch. Cynthia’s great passion is baking. Faster than we could look, we were in the kitchen with her to whip up a chocolate and a vanilla cake. Back at the MCC, joy broke out when we returned with two boxes full of cake. After all, no one expected that.

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7297="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-04-at-12.42.36-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank"> <img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7298="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.10.41-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

We look back on our last evening with mixed emotions. On the one hand, we had the honor of having dinner with the children, the staff, and Jimmy and his wife and having final conversations. Afterwards, each child received an individual photo as a keepsake and it was time to say goodbye! This was anything but easy for us! Long hugs, tears, and sad faces made saying goodbye even harder than it already was.

In closing, we would like to say a few words to the project:

It is indescribable what work is done here day after day in every area. EVERYONE involved gives their best to enable the children to have a carefree life with good future prospects. There is so much love, trust, and passion in it! Both of us are also incredibly grateful that we were allowed to become a part of it through our three-month stay. Our experiences, impressions, and adventures are indescribable. Even though our stay is now over, we will never forget all of this, and the children and people have taken a very special place in our hearts. For us, this place has become a second home, which is why it is already clear to us: we will come back someday, because

“Only mountains never meet again.”

(Quote from a Secondary student who spent his childhood at the Children Center)

Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank

<img decoding="async" class="" alignnone="" size-medium="" wp-image-7299="" src=""https://4kenya.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/WhatsApp-Image-2024-10-03-at-18.11.44-225x300.jpeg"" alt="4kenya" width=""225"" height=""300"" title="2024-09 - 3rd Internship Report by Antonia Burghardt and Rebekka Blank">

“What it is and what it was, only becomes clear when we say goodbye.” Our three-month stay here at the MCC is coming to an end.
