September brought not only extreme heat but also many new experiences! The current volunteers Lena, Sophia, Jonas, and the Kenyan volunteer Cyprian visited the skills center together with the social worker Mercy and saw how tofu is produced for the first time. We also went to the slums in Nairobi and visited a few families of the children at the MCC. This was another new and different experience for all of us after getting used to the daily routine at the home. <\/p>\n

During the week, we help out at the secondary school. Jonas used his IT skills to teach the students how to create a resume and got the IT room back into shape. Sophia and Cyprian held various workshops with the students in the subject “guidance and counseling” on the topics of sexual education, family, and puberty. Sophia also gave the students a better understanding of German culture in English class. The teenagers found the topics of food and schooling particularly interesting, and they even learned a few German words, such as “Schule,” which is pronounced the same in German and Swahili. <\/p>\n

On the weekends, we and the children help out a lot in the kitchen. Saturdays are Chapati Day, when all the children love to prepare the dough and then fry it, especially when Kenyan music is playing. On Sundays, we bake. <\/p>\n

In Nairobi, we were finally able to find cocoa powder and bake a delicious chocolate cake, which the children at the MCC, the secondary school students, the teachers, and the staff all found very tasty. The students at the secondary school especially are thrilled when they get something different to eat, as the diet there is even more repetitive than at the MCC. We prepare the dough at the MCC and then carry it to the secondary school, where there is an oven and the older students help out a lot\u2014baking 30 cakes is no walk in the park. We also made traditional German apple fritters, which the children had never eaten before, but they really liked them, especially with cinnamon and sugar. To wrap up our time here, there will be spaghetti with tomato sauce and pancakes with Nutella for all the children one last time! <\/p>\n

The swing at the MCC is used constantly, but the plastic seats didn’t last very long with 32 children, so we replaced them with sturdy seats made from old car tires. Thanks to a donation from Germany, we were also able to buy new, sturdy shoes for all the children at the MCC and the community-based children. Shortly after, a soccer match was held between the center-based and community-based children, because they finally don’t have to play barefoot or in their Crocs anymore and can now perform their tricks and shots with extra precision. <\/p>\n

Time is flying by here, and our last two weeks at the MCC are about to begin. We now feel like a real part of the MCC family! We will miss the MCC, the heat, the new daily routine, and especially the warm-hearted people. We will think back to our time here often and are very happy that we were able to have such a great and educational experience, which has also influenced our perspective on our lives in Germany. <\/p>\n
