With increasing resource scarcity, an environmentally friendly and thoughtful approach to water, energy, and waste can make all the difference. At the Maisha Mazuri Children Centre and the Maisha Mazuri Academy, we specifically focus on sustainable technology and a respectful approach to the environment. This isn’t just about ecological responsibility; it’s also about education: here, children and young people learn hands-on what they themselves can contribute to protecting nature and resources.

Solar Power for Light and Water

In a region with many hours of sunshine, it makes sense to harness the power of the sun. That’s why, at the Children’s Centre, school, and boarding house, we work with solar solutions wherever possible:

Solar lamps have provided nighttime security as outdoor lighting for years and are now being installed wherever possible, so that the children and young people at the Academy can read and study in the evenings – safely, energy-efficiently, and independently of the often unstable public power grid.

A solar-powered water pump draws water from the ground – reliably and free to operate. The water pumped during the day is enough to supply the Children’s Centre, school, boarding house, and neighboring households with sufficient water.

The water filtration system also runs on solar energy: Our water, which has a high fluoride content, is treated with the help of a solar-supported filter so that a portion of the water achieves excellent drinking water quality. At special drinking water stations, young and old (even skeptical Europeans 😉) can fill their water bottles and enjoy truly good water. The welcome side effect is that no plastic bottles need to be purchased, and at the same time, more water is consumed because it simply tastes good.

Wastewater becomes Reclaimed Water – Our Biodigester System

A true centerpiece of our sustainable concept is the modern biodigester system. Here, all wastewater from the Children’s Centre and the school/boarding house – from toilets, showers, sinks, and kitchens – is treated in an environmentally friendly way. In a biological purification process, the water is cleaned and then reused:

It flows back into the toilet flushing system – a closed water cycle that saves valuable fresh water.

Excess water is used, for example, for washing cars or watering our green fence (a natural, thorny alternative to expensive walls and fences).

The biodigester system has been functioning without complications for two years now, as have our pumping and filtration systems. Regular maintenance and conscious, trained handling by our team are likely the recipe for success. Not only does our team know how to operate the system, but the children and young people are also specifically made aware of what it takes for such a system to work. And what it means to make the best possible use of and appreciate the precious resource of water.

This way, we not only significantly reduce our water consumption but also demonstrate how modern technology can help conserve resources while creating a clean, healthy environment for children.

More Than Technology: Lived Responsibility

For us, sustainability is not a trend, but an attitude.
