“A dream came true,” says home economics teacher Madam Anita at the Academy of Maisha Mazuri, looking happily around the new school bakery. After three months of planning and renovations, they hit the ground running with rolls, bread, muffins, and chapatis\u2014though the list of baking requests and sales ideas is naturally much longer. Customers were quickly found within the school and the MCC children’s home, but now the goal is to win over the neighborhood and show everyone what the secondary school students can do alongside Teacher Anita and the staff baker. The group of enthusiastic home economics students working with Teacher Anita is large, and their skills go beyond just baking and cooking. The curtains they sewed for the school’s computer lab are impressive, as are the new covers protecting the computers from dust. If there were only enough material and time, they would spruce up every room with curtains. But back to our bakery: the goal is for it to become large and profitable enough to be self-sustaining, giving all interested students the chance to learn and practice baking and business management. After all, learning how to buy and sell economically and how to keep books are essential parts of standing on your own two feet later in life. The Stefan Krause Foundation\/PMK Foundation made this first permanent practical project possible and is providing financial support until the bakery can stand on its own. A huge thank you for that! <\/p>\n\n
